It contains six districts in the United States and one international division. The Cleveland Club is a part of the North Central District of the national organization which was founded in 1965. The Cleveland Club provides leadership development and networking opportunities to professional working women in Cleveland and northeast Ohio. It also awards college scholarships to youth and increases awareness of economic, educational, and other social issues facing the Black community through community service. The organization's most popular event, the Annual Founder's Day Breakfast, attracts local and national speakers to discuss a variety of domestic and international topics, as well as honoring women's occupational achievements and commitment to volunteerism with professional and student awards, and the prestigious Sojourner Truth Award. | | | | Creator: | Women's Advertising Club of Cleveland | | | | Dates: | 1919-1991 | | | | Abstract: | The Women's Advertising Club of Cleveland, Ohio, is a professional association of women in the advertising and public relations industry in Cleveland. It was founded in 1919 by several of the first women copy writers and commercial artists in the city. Early members included DuMont Grant, advertising manager of Halle Brothers Company, and Freda Gonder, Belle Hoffman, and Ruth Jenkins of the May Company. Others were employed in various advertising offices of department stores and women's specialty shops. As advertising expanded and more women found employment in the field, the club soon included those working in radio and television broadcasting, public relations, printing, direct mail, ad specialties, and newspapers. In addition to professional concerns, the group maintained an extensive social schedule, including benefit activities and community contests. Betty Ott was an active member of the club. | | | | Creator: | Electrical League of Northern Ohio | | | | Dates: | 1902-1989 | | | | Abstract: | The Electrical League of Northern Ohio, Inc. was founded in 1909 in Cleveland, Ohio. It was incorporated in 1915 as the Electrical League of Cleveland Inc., a non-profit association of electrical companies. Founding members included George E. Miller of the Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company and J. Robert Crouse of the General Electric Company. Under the leadership of John E. (Jack) North, president from 1923 to 1949, the League's primary function was the promotion of electrical products and services available to consumers through its membership, which included electrical manufacturers, distributors, dealers, contractors, and key Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company employees. Educational programs, meetings, and trade shows sponsored by the League were designed to educate the public on the uses of electricity and to provide technical training and marketing techniques to League members. The League established collateral organizations, including the Electrical Maintenance Engineers Association, the Women's Division, and the Sight Saving Council of Cleveland, in order to bring its educational and promotional programs to targeted groups. By 1949, the League became primarily an industrial organization. In 1958, the League was reorganized as a trade association. Its name was changed in the 1980s to the Electrical League of Northern Ohio, Inc. This collection also contains substantial personal papers of John E. (Jack) North, documenting his career in the electrical industry. | | | | Creator: | Greater Cleveland Nurses Association | | | | Dates: | 1920-1999 | | | | Abstract: | The Greater Cleveland Nurses Association (f. 1900), one of 27 districts of the Ohio Nurses Association encompassing Cuyahoga and Geauga Counties, is an organization for nurses offering informational, educational, involvement and leadership development opportunities. The mission of the organization is to be a "dynamic organization whose mission is to work for the improvement of health care for all people in significant and visible ways, to foster high professional standards and to promote the professional development of nurses." The organization provides educational opportunities at quarterly district meetings and other events and is an active participant in legislative hearings about health care issues as well as providing other avenues for political action regarding nursing and health care. They have worked with other agencies such as the Nursing Roundtable, Health Systems Agency, and WomenSpace on various initiatives. The organizational structure of the Greater Cleveland Nurses Association has evolved over the years and such a change that occurred in 1993 is documented in this collection.
